Problems can arise for children and adolescents and their carers in school the family, or social situations. They can become stuck in self destructive behaviour patterns, which they can act out internally (poor concentration, self-harming) or externally (poor relationships, unwanted behaviours). The aim is to help them find more constructive ways of thinking, feeling and behaving and also to support those caring for them such as parents and teachers as well as other workers.
The principles of CAT can be used to identify destructive patterns of behaviour and find ways of changing them. Techniques are the use of the Sequential Reformulation, which is a sequential diagram of the negative cycle written down after discussion between therapist and client. The work is to find ways in which the cycle can be altered to make a more positive cycle. Between session work is sometimes given from thinking through alternatives to trying out strategies and reporting back.
I get background information, but primarily want to hear the problem from the client's perspective. Clients are given the opportunity to make their own mind up about coming for therapy and if they wish to, a contract with issues and aims is recorded. The work is then focused on these issues. Four sessions at a time are offered, the work carried out in co-operation with the parents and carers. At the fourth session the work is reviewed and further sessions are discussed. Young people are given the opportunity to understand and change their behaviour in a way that gives them a sense of control and empowerment. Where relevant, mediation and advocacy can be provided between the young person and parents or carers.
This therapy is for children, adolescents and adults, with the emphasis on children and young people and their relationships with parents, other adults and their peers.
